There is a lot to a bee.

There are many ways in which I have bee amazed by my bees. They are able to memorize large area and find their way home unfailingly, despite a brain that would hardly cover a pin head. They work co-operativley in large colonies, communicate information and make collective decisions. They enginee perfectly uniform hexagonal cells and manage thes efficiently for brood rearing or food storage depending on the need of the season. And each new bee emerges equipped with an impressive rang of tools for the tasks required in its short but busy life.

This amazement only increase when we look at the details of a bee more closely, as we can with a microscope. We then see the bees not in any sense simpler than larger animals. If we have ever thought that, then it is because we could not see the complexity, not because we could not see the complexity, not because it is not there. Our knowledge

of how insects lear, communicate, navigate and fly is growing. However as we look at what we know it is hard not to feel that we have hardly scratched the surface.

The stimulus to write this book was my own experience in preparing for the modular examinations in bee biology of the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA). I had learnt human anatomy as a medical student, and had been exposed to several books which aimed to make this task easier. This lead me to think that modern imaging techniques and digital photography could be used to illustrate bee anatomy in a way that would make it easier to learn and bring out the fascination details.

I hope that this book will be useful to other preparing for BBKA exams, and will also be of value to anyone wanting to gain an understanding of bee or insect anatomy.

I am deeply indebted to Dr Damian Collins, a pathologist, for his support with the microscopic preparations and his interest in this project. I would also like to thank: Vivian Thompson and Kathrun White of Electron Microscopy Research Services of Newcastle University Medical School:Rudy Repka the clearest thinker on beekeeping matters that I know, for his review of the manuscript;Carl Stankowski for his good cheer and great typesetting and my wife, Clare, for being so longsuffering.
