Set in the beautiful Gaeltacht landscape of southwest Donegal, The Honey Trail is a family-friendly walk designed to connect you with the fascinating world of bees, pollinators, and native plants. As you follow the trail, learn how bees support ecosystems, discover pollinator-friendly plants, and explore Ireland’s long tradition of beekeeping – all rooted in the local heritage of Glencolmcille and Saint Colmcille, one of Ireland’s patron saints.

Visit Our Exhibition & Virtual Hive

Begin your visit at the Church of Ireland building, where you’ll find our indoor exhibition and interactive Virtual Hive – the perfect place to learn before you walk!

🖥️ Virtual Hive Highlights:

  • Visit all 4 levels: the Brood Chamber, the 2 Supers, and the Crown Board.
  • Find the Queen Bee, and see how how she is by the colour marking!
  • Save the infected bees by spotting and removing Varroa mites.
  • Watch educational bee videos hidden around the hive.

  • History of beekeeping and how it shaped the local area
  • Irish bee species – including the native black bee (Apis mellifera mellifera)

🌿 Guided Nature Walk with Professor Alex Weir

Available: Every Thursday, 1:30–2:30pm

The self-guided walk takes around 30–40 minutes, depending on your pace. Guided walks are approx. 1 hour.

Do I need to book? +

Only the guided walks require booking. You can book online or contact us directly. Self-guided tours are walk-in during opening hours.

Is it suitable for children?+

Absolutely – the trail is family-friendly, and the Virtual Hive is especially fun for younger visitors.

How can I book The Honey Trail tour? +

For self-guided tours, no booking is necessary—just drop in during opening hours. For guided nature walks, booking is recommended as spaces are limited. You can book online or pay at the shop, subject to availability.

Yes, visitors can enjoy free and convenient parking opposite the Church of Ireland building.
